CCHS basketball teams continue busy January play

The Carter County Bulldogs traveled to Plevna on a wintry Friday evening to take on the Cougars in 4C Conference play. The junior varsity boys opened the action with a 53-38 victory over the Cougars behind 21 points from Tiernan O'Connor.

In girls' varsity action, the Lady Bulldogs looked to avenge their 2024 loss on the road in Plevna but entered halftime down 25-19 to the Lady Cougars. Tough third quarter defense by the Lady Bulldogs held the Lady Cougars to only four points, and the Bulldogs' depth outlasted the Cougars' short roster to take the lead and control the second half. Nasya O'Connor led the Lady Bulldogs in scoring with 24 points. Brylee Swarts scored 18 for the Lady Cougars

The final game of the evening was a physical, back and forth contest between the Bulldogs and Cougars. The Bulldogs beat the Cougars 53-42 behind a game-high 22 points from Roger Beach. Jordan Paul's 13 points led the Cougars' balanced scoring attack.

The Bulldogs hosted the Terry Terriers on Saturday, January 18th in a full slate of basketball action. The junior varsity contest between the Lady Bulldogs and the Lady Terriers went down to the wire, with the Lady Bulldogs holding on for a 40-37 victory. Allie Shepherd had the hot hand for the Lady Bulldogs, hitting three 3-pointers on the way to a game-high 17 points.

In junior varsity boys' action, the Bulldogs fell 54-32 to the Terriers. Tiernan O'Connor led the Bulldogs with 15 points, while Terry's Ethan Meidenger led all scorers with 22 points.

In a battle between teams atop the 4C Conference, the Lady Terriers defeated the Lady Bulldogs 54-49. Nasya O'Connor led all scorers with 29 points, but it wasn't enough to take down the Terriers, whose second-half shooting was the difference in the game. Terry's Ashley Eaton (19 points) led three Terriers in double figures. The loss moved the Lady Bulldogs to 5-5 on the season and 2-1 in 4C Conference play.

The boys' varsity contest between the Bulldogs and the Terriers featured two teams that had not suffered a loss since mid-December; the Terriers had won 5 straight games, while the Bulldogs had won 7 in a row going into their matchup. The Bulldogs kept the game close through three quarters, but a fourth quarter three-point barrage by the Terriers put the game out of reach and secured the 66-46 victory. The loss dropped the Bulldogs to 8-2 on the season and 2-1 in 4C Conference play.

Next up, the Bulldogs face a three game in five day stretch – at home versus Jordan on Friday 1/24, at Wibaux on Saturday 1/25, and at Bison, SD on Tuesday 1/28.
