Jensen recognized for top achievement in Steer of Merit program

Bella Jensen of Ekalaka was recently honored at the Montana Stockgrowers Association (MSGA) luncheon in Billings for placing in the top 5 of the Steer of Merit program. Her steer earned 1st place in ultrasound quality across Montana, a significant achievement given the state's competitive beef cattle industry.

The Steer of Merit program, which has been running since the 1960s, is a statewide contest that evaluates beef steers based on carcass quality, ultrasound results, and cutability. The program is managed by MSGA in partnership with MSU Extension, with winners recognized in two divisions: Carcass and Ultrasound. Jensen's steer excelled in the ultrasound division, showcasing both its high-quality genetics and management.

Each year, the Steer of Merit Committee reviews the results and ranks carcasses based on several factors, including price per hundred-weight and cutability. The top five steers in each division are honored at the MSGA's annual convention, where Jensen's achievement was celebrated among other top ranchers and breeders.

Jensen's success highlights the hard work and dedication of Montana's young ranchers, as well as the important role programs like Steer of Merit play in fostering excellence in the state's cattle industry.
