School board focuses on staff morale and facility upgrades
As Thanksgiving approaches, the School Board expresses gratitude for the dedicated staff and supportive community. The board recently elected Lisa Borchgrevink as Chair and Mike Ashbrook as Vice Chair.
Staff Morale and Community Input
The board received results of a recent staff climate survey. While the overall results were positive, the board recognizes the importance of continued improvement. To further enhance communication and collaboration, the district plans to seek community input on the climate of the schools as well.
Supporting Students and Families
The district has secured a grant from Town Pump to launch a "Long Hungry Weekends" backpack program. This program aims to provide food for families in need, ensuring that students have access to nutritious meals over the weekend. The program is expected to be implemented before the upcoming Christmas break.
Addressing Facility Needs
A significant portion of the board meeting focused on the deteriorating condition of the high school roof, which was installed in 1992. To address this issue and ensure the building's long-term sustainability, the district has initiated a comprehensive facilities assessment. This assessment will help determine the best course of action for addressing ventilation, insulation, and overall building efficiency.
To gather expert input, a team of district representatives, including Brittani Brence, Arnold Rychner, Branson Rogers, Tye Williams, James Kapptie, Stefan Livingston, and David Loudermilk, met with Bob from McKinstry and Brady to discuss the specific needs of the building. The team identified the need for improved airflow and ventilation, which will require the expertise of a mechanical engineer. McKinstry's mechanical engineer, Jeff, conducted an initial pre-assessment of the building and its components on October 25th.
McKinstry has provided a preliminary estimate of $39,954 for an evaluation of the project.
The district plans to finance the necessary improvements through a bond, which will be tailored to the specific needs identified in the facilities assessment. To ensure community input and transparency, the district will host community roundtables to discuss the project and answer questions.
By prioritizing staff well-being, student success, and facility upgrades, the School Board is committed to providing a quality education for all students.
Please don't hesitate to stop by and talk about all the school's happenings. The more you know, the more you know!
