CAPITOLETTER

September 30, 2024

Well, October comes in two days, but the people on Tie Creek and at Capitol had a temperature above one-hundred degrees, today. Tomorrow’s high is predicted to be forty degrees cooler. We can hope that another big wind is not part of the coming cold front.

Dick and Erma Albert had a very normal week. On Tuesday, when they were shopping in the Hills, they picked up some supplies for Bobbie to use for the Senior Citizen dinners. Erma had a chiropractor appointment on Wednesday. They both went to the chicken dinner at the Senior Center, on Friday, and Erma stayed afterward to play cards. She reports that the new Buffalo Library building is nearly completed, and will open soon at the location near the Courthouse. Dick and Erma went to church on Sunday, and stayed for the pot luck dinner and meeting in the afternoon.

Bruce and Lynn Gustafson went to the Hills to do some shopping, on Wednesday. Lynn was invited as a special friend, to join in Bingo on Thursday. The Bingo for special friends was on Thursday at the school in Buffalo. Sunday was the all-parish church service, and Bruce and Lynn went to Ladner for the service and dinner afterward. Little Missouri Church was asked to bring desserts, and Lynn took along a dessert for the meal.

Doug and Julia Davis had friends visit from East River, this week. Dave Finney and his son, Kirk, came on Friday, and spent a couple of days helping Doug with some chores. They went to the Camp Crook Firemen’s supper on Saturday night. Doug stayed and helped clean up afterwards, and then they went to watch the football game for a while.

Alvin and Marlee Cordell had hunters from Tennessee, and then other hunters from Pennsylvania, this week. On Thursday evening, Alvin and Marlee went to Belle Fourche for the Ag Banquet at the Community Center. There was good food and interesting speakers. Marlee, and Ryan and Tawni’s family went to church at the Methodist Church in Camp Crook on Sunday, and stayed for the pot luck dinner afterward.

Junior and Shirley Melum had visitors on Saturday. Karen Odell came to return a baking pan to Shirley, and George Oleson came for a visit, too. The four of them had such an interesting visit that the time seemed to fly past. Rachel Melum had gone to Baker for the Fall Festival, on Saturday. She and some of the other Baptist Church ladies spent time painting special designs on faces. On Sunday, Ernie and Tommy joined Rachel at church, and they all stayed for the church picnic in the afternoon. On Sunday evening they visited at Junior and Shirley’s.

Dorothy Padden has been keeping up with the Harding County sports on the computer. The NFHS website shows most of the games. Kelly Padden stopped by on Saturday, to bring Dorothy some flowers and stay for a good visit.

Bryce and Dawn Padden have been keeping up with the sporting events of Harding County. With grandchildren in most sports and age levels, it keeps them busy. On Tuesday, Dawn got some work done for her mother, Helen Stevens. They worked at the cabin in the Chalk Buttes. Then on Wednesday, Bryce and Dawn took a break from sports and did some preg-testing at home. Friday was the Timber Lake high school football game. Timber Lake has a new football facility that is really great, and so is their concession stand food. Dawn was at the Lemmon junior high volleyball jamboree on Saturday. On Sunday, Bryce and Dawn were busy at home, moving cows.

Karen Odell visited with granddaughter, Kenna, on Friday. That evening, she watched the Mitchell High School football game at Watertown on the internet. It was a tough game, but so great to get to see her grandson play. On Saturday, Karen finally returned a baking pan to Shirley Melum. It was a nice day, and good time to visit. As it turned out, George Oleson came to visit also, and they had a wonderful time talking and having some of Rachel’s cake and coffee. On Sunday, Karen played piano for the church service in Camp Crook. It was a special Sunday with four baptisms and communion. Their past minister, Jerry Dinsmore, came out of retirement for a Sunday, to conduct the service, and the church was packed with family and friends. After the service, everyone joined in a dinner that included special cakes for birthdays for Asher Wolff and Marlee Cordell. Karen visited with all of her kids, this week. She’s hoping the hot weather is over for a while.

A white-out and a black-out do the same thing. It’s only when variety happens that we can see.
