'Dogs lose on homecoming

The CCHS Bulldogs held the ball for a large part of the first quarter in their game against the Culbertson Cowboys for homecoming on September 27th at Rowley Field. Blue started the game with a couple of offensive penalties that quickly put them behind the chains. They were forced to punt but Culbertson's return man fumbled the kick and Blue recovered. After that, they chewed up yards on the ground, using 15 plays before punching the ball into the end zone on a Zander Ashbrook outside scamper. Clay Rost added the two-point conversion, giving the 'Dogs an 8-0 lead in the first quarter.

Culbertson had a nice return on the ensuing kickoff. They eventually scored on a 35-yard pass that capped off a seven play drive. Culbertson's quarterback ran in the conversion to tie the game with 1:12 left in the first.

The 'Dogs next offensive series lasted eleven plays. They were eventually stopped about midway through the second quarter when they failed to pick up a fourth down around the Culbertson 10-yard line.

Culbertson scored on a long run only four plays later to break the 8-8 tie. They added the conversion on a fake extra-point-turned-pass to take a 16-8 lead. Their lead only grew from there.

Blue was stopped just short of the line to gain on fourth down during the next series around midfield. The Cowboys scored on the very next play with a run up the right side. They kicked the extra point, taking a 23-8 lead with 3:56 left before halftime.

A quick three-and-out by both teams led to a Culbertson punt that didn't really go anywhere. The 'Dogs ended up with great field position around the Cowboys' 12-yard line with 1:24 left before half. They were in a great position to score and go into the half with only a one-possession deficit. The opposite happened.

Another holding call put Blue behind the chains. They turned the ball over on downs with 25 seconds left at the Cowboys' 17-yard line. The Cowboys then scored on the final play of the half, a 50-yard passing strike as time expired to take a 29-8 lead into halftime.

The Cowboys put up another quick score, this time on a long run, at the 10:43 mark of the third quarter that effectively put the game on ice. They added the extra point, giving them a 36-8 lead.

Culbertson added a few more scores in the third and fourth quarter and the running clock rule went into effect.

The Bulldogs' only other score of the game came at the 2:00 mark in the fourth quarter when Eldon Morris scored on a 43-yard run. Ethan Mellon ran in the two-point conversion. The final score of the game was 50-18 in favor of the Cowboys.

The Bulldogs (3-2) will look to rebound with a game versus the Longhorns (1-4) at Wibaux this Saturday, October 5th.
