Saturday storm event caused damage and blocked roads on the Sioux Ranger District

Public encouraged to find other places to visit on the Custer Gallatin Forest

On Saturday, July 13th, the Sioux Ranger District of the Custer Gallatin National Forest experienced a thunderstorm event with winds exceeding 100mph. On the Forest, this storm system caused damage to some developed sites, power outages, and has blocked roads trails particularly in the Ekalaka Hills, Long Pines, and East Short Pines land units.

"It will take time to assess the extent of the storm damage and re-open roads," said Sioux District Ranger Kurt Hansen. "We hope to have a better idea of the impacts by the end of the week. Further details on road status and campground status will come late this week."

Until it is possible to evaluate the full extent of the damage and safety concerns, particularly on the Montana side of the Sioux Ranger District, the public is encouraged to find another place to visit on the forest.
