Saturday storm causes widespread damage

On July 13th, a severe thunderstorm event with winds reportedly exceeding 100 mph swept through the county - and entire region - causing widespread damage to trees, crops, outbuildings and many homes. Downed power poles south of town caused some to be without power for multiple days following the storm.

The city transfer site was open Sunday morning for crews and individuals to dump loads of fallen trees, debris and branches.

Outside of Ekalaka, there were additional reports of even more severe damage, especially in the Belltower and Chalk Buttes communities where some outbuildings were completely destroyed along with destruction to grain bins and roof damage to homes. The Custer Gallatin National Forest also felt effects of the storm with significant damage to trees, many of which blocked roads and trails.
