A group of Carter County High School students recently traveled to Washington D.C. through Close Up. The Close Up Foundation is a nonprofit, nonpartisan civic education organization in Washington, D.C. Established in 1971, Close Up offers programming to educate and encourage young people to participate in their civic affairs and government.
Locally, CCHS students have been taking part in Close Up semi-regularly for several years. Often the participating students, juniors and seniors, raise funding year-round in order to be able to take the once-in-a-lifetime trip.
This year's group had a chance to meet with longtime Unites States Senator Jon Tester. In a later social media post, Tester wrote: "Inspired by the plans these Carter County juniors and seniors have for their futures in the Treasure State. From talking with them this morning, I have a feeling they'll do just fine."
