Museum to host Montana conversation 'Jeannette Rankin: America's Conscience'

Join Carter County Museum on Thursday, May 9, at 7 p.m. for the monthly Carter County Geological Society Meeting for a special presentation of "Jeannette Rankin: America's Conscience" with Mary Jane Bradbury. The program is at 306 North Main Street in Ekalaka. The presentation, which is part of Carter County Geological Society's lecture series, is free and open to the public. This program is also part of Montana Conversations and is provided by Humanities Montana through grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities United We Stand Initiative, Montana's Cultural Trust, and private donations.

Born to privilege in 19th Century Montana, Jeannette Rankin found her passion working for child-labor and welfare reform. Humanitarian, pacifist, and tireless advocate for social reform, Jeannette Rankin became the first woman elected to U.S. Congress, and the only member of Congress to vote against U.S. entry into both world wars. Bradbury brings Rankin to life to tell about her journey from grassroots suffragist to being the first woman to participate in United State government. Hear in Rankin's own words her views on equality and government reform-words that ring true today.

Mary Jane Bradbury is a historic interpreter and scholar who brings history to life for audiences of all ages. She is an artist in residence for the CM Russell Museum in Great Falls and the Montana Historical Society in Helena. Bradbury will also be presenting a program on Calamity Jane at O'Fallon Historical Society in Baker on Sunday, May 5 at 2 p.m.

As a reminder, all Montana teachers can earn one hour of continuing education credits for attending this free program and others at Carter County Museum. This program will be followed by a short business meeting featuring new and upcoming projects at the museum.
