It has been a busy couple of months for Ekalaka Public Library. Pat Kalstrom is taking some time off, so I (Torey Spring) am the interim director until she returns. Get well soon, Pat!

The library has been making monthly visits to the country schools in our county including Hawks Home, Hammond, and Alzada schools. In January I was able to see 26 kids, in total, who checked out 58 books. Visiting the country schools and delivering books is one of my favorite parts of the job. Loading and unloading the books repeatedly is maybe not my favorite part of the job.

EPL also hosts Story Hour each Thursday from 10-11:00 throughout the school year. Mrs. Walker’s high school class reads a story and provides a fun art project for the preschool aged children. We have been averaging 12-17 preschoolers each week. The “Story Hour Art” window showcases, as you may have guessed, the latest art from the kids.

The library also held a 50/50 drawing on January 25th during the JV and Varsity basketball games vs. Plevna. The Bulldogs won all three games, and the generous crowd bought a lot of tickets. Luther Waterland purchased the winning ticket and donated the proceeds back to the library. Thank you so much Luther! I am so excited to purchase new hardcover books for our Story Hour kids!

Here is a peak at some new items for 2024 with descriptions from Goodreads.com.

“The Women” by Kristin Hannah

#Historical #War

The Women is the story of one woman gone to war, but it shines a light on all women who put themselves in harm’s way and whose sacrifice and commitment to their country has too often been forgotten. A novel about deep friendships and bold patriotism, The Women is a richly drawn story with a memorable heroine whose idealism and courage under fire will come to define an era.

“Holly” by Stephen King

#Horror #Thriller #Mystery

Stephen King’s Holly marks the triumphant return of beloved King character Holly Gibney. Readers have witnessed Holly’s gradual transformation from a shy (but also brave and ethical) recluse in Mr. Mercedes to Bill Hodges’s partner in Finders Keepers to a full-fledged, smart, and occasionally tough private detective in The Outsider. In King’s new novel, Holly is on her own, and up against a pair of unimaginably depraved and brilliantly disguised adversaries…

Holly must summon all her formidable talents to outthink and outmaneuver the shockingly twisted professors in this chilling new masterwork from Stephen King.

“Weyward” by Emilia Hart

#Historical Fiction #Witches #Fantasy

Weaving together the stories of three extraordinary women across five centuries, Emilia Hart's Weyward is an enthralling novel of female resilience and the transformative power of the natural world.

“Fourth Wing, & Iron Flame” by Rebecca Yarros

#Fantasy, #Romance #Romantasy

Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders.

Visit us at 105 N. Main Street. Open Tuesday through Friday, 11:00 am – 5:00 pm. And as always, thank you for supporting your local library!
