Help check accuracy of list
Area veterans, as well as their families and friends, are encouraged to read the following list of United States veterans who were honorably discharged or were killed in action since the beginning of WWI. The list is meant to include all veterans with Carter County ties.
The committee started the veterans memorial at Perso Park project a few years ago and has used several resources for names. Some names came from family submissions and donations, others were found in the discharge books at the courthouse, the cemetery book prepared by Charles Sykes, the Beaverlodge Cemetery list of veterans and a list that was compiled at the museum. Lists were cross referenced with each other.
The committee is asking for the community to help check the accuracy of the list by carefully reading for any mistakes in spelling or otherwise, in addition to any accidental omissions. Remember this list includes past and present veterans. Future names will be added.
This has been a daunting project and undoubtedly mistakes were made with the list of names. Initially, families were donating $50 per name, however the group decided that too many names might get left off due to veterans no longer having local family. At that point, in an effort to be inclusive, many other names were added. Donations are still welcome and would be appreciated.
Names will be engraved into granite slabs on the walls. The committee hopes this is completed by the 2024 Carter County Days of '85. Efforts and comments are appreciated, and any mistakes found in the following list may be called or texted to Dave Williams at 406-975-6805, Carole Carey at 406-975-6645, Jessica Walker at 406-975-5377 or Tracey Walker at 406-975-8839. Many thanks to all who have served!
