CAPITOLETTER

The heat headed back to Capitol and Tie Creek, this week, and the mosquitoes are still hanging around. The grasshoppers diminished, but had already done much damage. Maybe the mosquitoes drove some of them off. On various days, the air was filled with smoke from the Canadian fires, and the temperatures stayed mostly in the high eighties.

Curt Zolnoski came to visit Clint and Denise Zolnoski’s, on Tuesday evening, to stay to help ultrasound yearling heifers on Wednesday. Curt, Clint, Gene Secrest and Ronda Cordell headed to the Desert, about 6:00 a.m. to beat the heat, and round up cows, calves and yearlings, so they could get the pairs sorted off and trailed to a different pasture, before Doc Scoggins showed up. Diane Wear came from Ekalaka to help. Denise and Diane furnished the picnic lunch.

Diane spent the night, and chauffeured Ronda to Belle Fourche and Spearfish, on Thursday morning. It’s quite a treat to have a driver once-in-awhile. Ronda went to two appointments, before enjoying lunch at their favorite spot, The Pizza Ranch. On Sunday, Ronda drove into Camp Crook for dinner at Over the Edge, and to mail letters.

Darby Zolnoski went back to school on Wednesday. She is a first grader this year in Buffalo. When school starts, it seems summer’s over, and a new routine begins. Abby is a little lonesome for her sister during the day, but she has her wiener dog, Ruby, to play with. Clint’s family attended the first football game of the season, that was in Buffalo. It sounded like a close game. Buffalo won by a couple of points. Actually, Buffalo and Bison have combined for football, due to lacking numbers of players. Gene and Kim Secrest spent time at the Zolnoski’s home over the weekend.

Dick and Erma Albert have had company this week. Their daughter, Heather and Stan, have been here helping them out. First they had to put in a new water heater, and do some plumbing, and they have been doing lots of other chores, too. They all went to town on Wednesday. On Friday, they went to the Senior Citizen chicken dinner at the Senior Center. They went to church at the Catholic Church on Sunday, and then had lunch at Saloon Number Three. Father Brian will be on vacation in Minnesota, for a couple of weeks, so another priest will be visiting.

It is not news to know Pete Anderson was in Camp Crook, because he lives there now, but he did go to church at the Methodist Church, and was seen walking toward Over The Edge or the Corner Bar for lunch.

Tommy Melum has finished a week of school already. On Saturday, Ernie, Rachel and Tommy went to Deadwood for ‘Cool Deadwood Nights’ and the vintage car show. They are still haying, and glad to save it from the grasshoppers. On Sunday, the youth group started again for the new school year, at their church in Baker. They have it on Sundays, so that those coming from a distance can attend after church.

Bryce and Dawn Padden had visited Kelly and Spring Padden’s for their granddaughter Kadi’s birthday. Next, they camped at Helen Stevens’ for the ‘Days of ‘85’ in Ekalaka. They went to the Gene Odell Funeral on Monday. Then came the Harding County Fair in Camp Crook, and the Diligent Doers held their cake walk and silent auction after the Old Timer’s Picnic. The temperature outside was over one hundred degrees, but they couldn’t talk Dorothy out of watching the Matched Bronc Ride at the Arena.

By Sunday, things had cooled down, and the parade was the longest one yet. Dawn had taken lots of pictures, so she worked to get them sorted and ready for newspaper pictures. Lorraine had been here from Texas to open the Theater Museum for the fair. Her museum gets better every year. Dorothy had supper with Lorraine at her house in Camp Crook before Lorraine headed back south to Texas again.

Then, Bryce, Dawn, and Dorothy headed out with the camper for Fort Peck. It is the perfect centralized place for them to meet and camp with Dorothy’s brother Clyde’s boys. Lynn and Donny came from Malta, Russell came from Great Falls, and Brett and Stacey came from Laurel. The weather was cool and clear, and the fishing was good too, even though the fish were not big in size. The best part was the ‘catching up’ and visiting.

Karen Odell made a trip to Buffalo on Monday. On Wednesday, she went to Ekalaka on business and into Camp Crook that evening to visit Yvonne Yoder. She met with Chancey Odell and Megan in Camp Crook on Friday, and on Saturday, she talked to Micki Odell.

She went to church at the Methodist Church in Camp Crook on Sunday, where Yvonne Yoder was in charge of the service this week. Yvonne gave an insightful sermon on the Bible story of Joseph and his brothers. Tyler Wolfe provided background information for the Bible scriptures about Joseph, and Lynette Wolfe had another great children’s sermon for the kids and adults too. Karen played piano for the hymns. Yvonne had information about potential interested pastors who might want to serve the churches in Harding County. Back home, Karen watched the First Presbyterian Church Service in Marietta, Georgia on YouTube during lunch. In the afternoon, Karen talked to her brother, Jim Evans, her son, Jeff Odell, and her daughter, Mollie Smith.

Remember, If you want the cutest kitten around, Karen has it and a few more like it. They are beautiful little white kittens with dark ears, nose and tail.

A young teacher was meeting a new first-grade student, so she decided upon asking a few questions to see if he would need extra help catching up to the level of the others in the class. She asked him if he knew his birthday, and right away the boy answered, ‘November 20th.’ The teacher continued on by asking him ‘what year?” When he answered, ‘Every year,’ the teacher decided he wouldn’t need extra help.
