The Broadus Hawks might be the Bulldogs' closest football opponent in terms of miles, but Friday night's season opener at Rowley Field was a non-conference game, providing both team's a chance to learn a bit more about themselves before beginning conference play.
The Bulldogs are a young squad this year. Several freshman will be contributing valuable playing time as the season progresses, even more so now since CCHS was hit with multiple injuries in the opener.
The Bulldogs received the opening kickoff and got off to a slow start. A turnover on downs gave the ball back to Broadus. The Hawks scored on a fourth and short conversion which resulted in a long quarterback keeper up the middle for a touchdown.
Blue scored in the second quarter on a 23-yard run by tight end Cardell Laughery and tied the game at six. For the rest of the second quarter, the Bulldogs looked good on both sides of the ball, getting defensive stops and scoring two more times to take a 20-6 lead into the half. Both second quarter touchdowns came on quarterback sneaks from Chace Loehding.
Unfortunately that was the last of the scoring for the Bulldogs as run-blocking was missing throughout most of the second half. Broadus, meanwhile, had their run game going in the second half and scored three touchdowns. First year coach Wyatt Williams of Broadus led his team back against CCHS late. The Hawks won 26-20.
This weekend CCHS opens conference play at home versus a formidable opponent in Scobey. Last week, the Spartans lost though to Joliet, 6-42. Kickoff is a 6:30 p.m. on Friday night at Rowley Field.
