Your word, Lord

Hello God, it’s me, Mara:

You know, Lord, most of us believe that the Bible is Your inspired word and the foundation of our life and faith, but our behavior sometimes denies this. We have traditionally devalued history into ‘back then’ which has nothing to do with today. Somehow the point is missing that it is false to think that each person can decide what is true for themselves. The Bible is neither fiction nor textbook fact; it is a story that is true – it tells us who we are and who You are, God.

In general, the Bible is held in high regard, but no longer is it believed that truth with a capital “T” is worth going after since modern wisdom informs that everyone is their own truth. Such nonsense! So why bother reading the Bible? Oh, be careful, for reading the Bible may do things to us that we don’t want done.

Isaiah wrote that Your word, Lord, is like rain that waters the earth. Jeremiah said. Your Word is like a hammer that breaks rocks in pieces. Words are important; they are vessels that create relationships or they can destroy; words undermine self-esteem or words build up.

Your words, Lord, “nurture, judge, and create hope; words can kill or make alive,” wrote Donald Joel, and, “The Bible is God’s word in that when it is read, God works.”

Let us not use our learning to protect us against the Bible, to escape the possibility of being touched by Your Spirit, Lord.

In our busyness, may we take time to see You anew each morning. May we recognize Your voice over and over again for You do call us; You know us each by name. Thank You, Lord that You can call us by name – and that we know a miracle awaits us each new day.

Love, Mara
