What is the Gospel

Hello God, it’s me, Mara:

You know, Lord, William D. Longstaff (in 1882) paraphrasing Hebrews 12:14 wrote the song, “Take Time to Be Holy.” In those four verses he tells us to make friends of God’s children, help those who are weak, spending time with the Lord, and lead by His Spirit, our friends, in our conduct, Your likeness they shall see. That is an Easter message that is just as powerful and significant today as it was when it was written. Here is a poem that emphasizes those thoughts:

WHAT IS THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO ME?

What is the Gospel according to me? Have I accepted You hung on the ‘Tree?’ You hung there and died, from sin set me free?

Your own precious blood dripped down from Your side; my sins were so black, for these sins You died. Though try as one might, from sin none can hide.

Your blood paid the price, the way’s been made clear; now I have a task, tell all who will hear, “With Jesus as Lord, there’s nothing to fear.”

So, what’s the Good News according to me? Am I living life so others can see; so they’ll want to know Salvation is free?

What witness give I that You reign supreme? Does my neighbor know their soul You’ll redeem? That living for You beats being midstream?

What IS the Gospel according to me? Just where will my friends spend eternity? If I am the only Gospel they’d see.

Thank You, Lord for dying for all of us in the human race. Each one of us has free will, each one has a soul, and individually, each one must choose where they’ll spend eternity. Hebrews 12:14 “Live in peace … and be holy.” Lord, help me be a willing vessel for You to use that others would see You in me - in case I’m the only Gospel they’ll see.

Love Mara
