Darlene Carter Rose first ran for Carter County Superintendent of Schools in 1990 and was successful against the incumbent. She served the county in that capacity until December of 2000. It was then that county commissioners went through the process of combining the office with the Clerk of District Court, due in large part to the fact that rural schools had dwindled in number, no longer warranting the need for a full-time elected position.
It is however, a requirement for a certified person to perform certain functions of the office and Carter Rose fulfilled that requirement until December, 2011 when she made the decision not to renew her education certification.
Carter Rose spent those twenty plus years traveling throughout the county visiting all of the rural schools, providing much needed mentorship for the teachers, bonding with students, administering tests, and planning and facilitating county-wide rural school functions including track meets, spelling bees and graduations. It would be a mistake not to mention that she made sure the office provided the spelling bee winner with funds to make attending the state bee possible!
Carter Rose very much enjoyed her tenure at the helm of the County Superintendent's office. She is currently residing in Billings where she is closer to her daughters, although she does sorely miss everyone at home.
