On January 13, the period for filing for state and county offices opened. The filing period remains open through March 14 at 5 p.m.

As of Monday, six individuals, four of whom are incumbents, have filed for a county office.

County positions up for election in 2022 include Carter County Commissioner from District #2 (six-year term), County Attorney (4-year term), County Clerk and Recorder/Public Administrator/Surveyor (4-year term), County Treasurer (4-year term) and Justice of the Peace (4-year term).

Incumbent Steve Rosencranz, Republican, and Pamela J. Castleberry, Republican, have filed for commissioner. Incumbent Corbit S. Harrington has filed for County Attorney. Incumbent Jesi Pierson, Republican, has filed for County Treasurer.

Non partisan candidates for Justice of the Peace who have filed include incumbent Kathleen “Kathy” Rosencranz and Kamely Harkins.

No one had filed for County Clerk and Recorder/Public Administrator/Surveyor as of Monday.

To file for county offices, individuals must be 18 years or older and be a citizen of the state and an elector of the county in which the duties of the offices are to be exercised.

Interested individuals may file at the Clerk and Recorder’s Office in the Carter County Courthouse, 214 Park Street in Ekalaka. Questions concerning the election may be directed to the office at (406) 775-8749.

Montana’s 2022 midterm election will have two U.S. representative seats on the ballot after the U.S Census Bureau announced its state population data in April of last year. Montana was one of six states to gain at least one U.S. House seat.

Statewide, state district or legislative candidates can file online, in person at the Secretary of State’s Office in Helena, or by mail or fax (the filing fee must be paid at the time of filing).

Montana’s primary election will take place on June 7, followed by the general election on November 8.
