Gumbo Gophers reflect on busy year

The Gumbo Gophers 4-H club recently wrapped up a busy year. Members are Daniel, Elizabeth, and Grace Hall; Alivia, and Natalie Foxley; Colyn, and Clancy Higgins; Selah, and Suri Johnston; Zander Oliver; Keenan McInerney; Tylinn Thomas; and Tanner Wright. Leaders are Sharon Higgins, Crystal Higgins, Terri Raye McInerney, Lisa Borchgrevink, and Thebea Thomas.

The club held their organizational meeting December 21 at the Alzada hall. Officers were elected, Christmas bags were filled and the club went Christmas caroling.

On January 22, the club met at the Higgins' and did shooting sports with bows and BB guns/pellet guns.

Awards day, where members received their awards from the previous year, was held at Carter County Events Center on February 14.

Terri Raye McInerney hosted a meeting on March 12. The club made quick breads and pizza. Sharon held the April 10 meeting. The members of the club made nine patch pillows.

On May 29, members met at the Alzada hall for weigh-ins of lambs and pigs. Chuck Waterland sheared sheep and the group learned about parasites.

June 3 was All Events Day at the Events Center. Alivia, Natalie, Colyn, Keenan, Zander and Tylinn participated in the Food Festival. Participating in the Fashion Revue/Quilt show were Alivia, Natalie and Tylinn. Colyn, Keenan, and Zander gave demonstrations. Alivia, Clancy, Colyn, Selah, Keenan, Zander and Tylinn did Small Projects Judging.

4-H camp was held at Camp Needmore and Natalie was a teen leader. Campers from the club were Alivia, Colyn, Elizabeth, Grace, Selah, Tylinn and Tanner.

The club held a barbecue at the Alzada hall on June 30. This was a fundraiser for the Alzada Volunteer Fire Department that raised $1,528.

Crystal Higgins hosted a showmanship clinic on July 23.

The club went to Orman Dam on July 28 where they had a picnic, swam, kayaked and paddle boated.

The Carter County Fair was held the second weekend in August. All of the club members exhibited their projects at the fair. Members had a float in the parade. The slogan was "4-H Celebrates Hometown Heroes."

On October 29, Miranda Hendrickson hosted a Halloween party at the Alzada hall. The club had two games, pumpkin bowling and a ghost walk.

During the year some members participated in livestock showing and judging at other shows, Fallon County Fair, Oreo trip and a 4-H youth exchange trip.
