CCM to open warehouses on Aug. 14

Carter County Museum will be opening its warehouses to the public during the Days of ‘85. The warehouses, located just south of town on Hwy 323, will be open from 10 a.m. to 2p.m. on Saturday, August 14.

Warehouse 1 includes over 80 percent of museum fossils and some historical artifacts that are not on display in the museum. Everything from detailed cleaning and stabilizing fossils to making custom protective cradles for the specimens occurs in this warehouse. One project currently underway is the preparation of a giant aquatic reptile called a mosasaur, which swam in an ancient sea 70 million years ago near Ekalaka. Once this specimen is fully cleaned, it will be able to deepen understanding of the history of life in Carter County.

Warehouse 2 includes viewing of the old Ekalaka jail, Mrs. Tooke’s autographed kindergarten apple, Ross Major’s sheep wagon, the original hand-drawn Ekalaka fire wagon, an old Willy’s jeep, a portable last rites altar, the Mill Iron Community Hall banner, an Ekalaka Eagle typesetting machine, old Ekalaka theater seating, a Royal Neighbors meeting protocol mat, an Eastern Star floor seating canvas mat, quilt display and many other items.

The museum will also be open throughout the Days of ‘85. Hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, including Sunday. Additionally, the Junior Scientist program will take place between 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m on Thursday at the museum, and CCM will host Science Friday at the fairgrounds beginning at 1 p.m. on August 13.
