The importance of reading

Theodor Seuss Geisel was born on March 2nd, 1904. Widely known by his pen name, Dr. Seuss, the writer is recognized for his popular children's books. Dr. Seuss died in 1991. On March 2nd, 1998 the first National Education Association Read Across America Day, or "Dr. Seuss Day," was celebrated nationally. The focus of the day is to get involved with children's reading.

Locally, Ekalaka Elementary students celebrated Dr. Seuss on March 4 by participating in Seuss themed games, races and activities in and around the school. In addition, students and teachers were given red and white-striped hats to wear that resembled the hat from Seuss' famous 1957 book, "The Cat in the Hat."
