Dahl Memorial Hospital has received generous donations of $62,917.15 from Zoe Waldren, $5,000 from an anonymous family, $2,000 from Luther and Marlene Waterland, $500 from an anonymous donor, and $400 from the class of 2002 in memory of Lois Lambert and Shelly Grimes. To date the Dahl Memorial Endowment fund has reached over $184,000 with an additional $20,000 pledged over the next four years.
Zoe Waldren was born in Baker, on May 20, 1926, to Arthur E. “Big Kid” and Gladys Speelmon Dague. She attended school in Ekalaka and graduated from Carter County High School in 1943. She worked for Ray Nickerson in the Carter County Clerk and Recorder’s office for a few months after graduation.
Waldren was a model and an avid airplane pilot. After she retired, she trained abused and “hard to handle” dogs from the animal shelter and placed them in good homes to assist people with physical needs. She was featured in the Woman’s World Magazine in 1994 for her dog training.
Waldren moved from Bakersfield back to Ekalaka and entered Dahl Memorial Nursing Home on January 1, 2016.
The Dahl Memorial Endowment Fund will provide a perpetual source of income to support the hospital’s important work of “improving the lives and health of the Carter County community through comprehensive services provided in a professional and dedicated atmosphere of compassion.”
“We are excited to announce the creation of this fund to provide lasting support for the health and well-being of our community,” said Ryan Tooke, Chief Executive Officer at Dahl Memorial Hospital. “An endowment fund is a great way to ensure that the hospital’s work continues for generations.”
