Museum calls for community quilt blocks

In September, the Carter County Museum will celebrate Welcoming Week with a series of events geared around the theme "creating home together." The first of these events will be the display of a community quilt. Using the provided color palette create a 12" x 12" block and mail or drop it off to the museum by September 4, 2020.

"Welcoming Week is a time to not only celebrate the values of equality and belonging, but to bring our communities together to live them in practice," said Rachel Peric, Executive Director of Welcoming America. "In places large and small, rural and urban, thousands of local leaders remind us of what is possible when we make it our priority to create a sense of home for every member of our community, so that all of us can be healthy, participate, and thrive."

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Welcoming Week will look different this year, with many communities opting to host virtual events and increasing engagement on social media. To see a full list of events around the world, visit welcomingweek.org. Organizations, local governments, and individuals are encouraged to participate however they can.

Other events at the museum for the week (September 12-20) will include a virtual art demonstration by Jenn Hall (Sept. 16) and a Zoom lecture on the musical instruments brought by immigrants to Carter County (Sept. 18). Check out the museum Facebook page for more information.
