Bicycle safety a concern as children pedal into summer

Since 1956, the month of May has been recognized as National Bike Month and that continues this year as cycling is considered a healthy option to stay active. More people, especially children, have been seen riding around Ekalaka in 2020. One reason is that students have been home for several weeks amid the current pandemic and school closures.

As warmer weather approaches, bicycling is a great excuse for kids to get some fresh air and exercise, but it is also important to stay safe.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has guidelines and tips to enjoy the riding season safely. According to NHTSA, 857 bicyclists were killed in traffic-related crashes across the United States in 2018.

Some Ekalaka residents may think that an accident resulting in severe injuries or even death will never happen locally, but multiple close calls have been reported to Town Council members and the Eagle in recent weeks. It is terrifying to even think about.

Cyclists should always wear a helmet, maintain their bike, make themselves visible, watch for hazards, obey all traffic laws, ride in straight lines (not in and out of cars), look before turning and use verbal and non-verbal communication. These safety tips are especially important on Main Street where cyclists are not permitted to ride on the sidewalks because it is hazardous to pedestrians. Instead, these cyclists ride down the street, directly behind vehicles parked at an angle.

Motorists need to slow down and use caution, especially during warm months when children are out. They should double check surroundings before turning and backing onto streets, check mirrors and blind spots and give appropriate space when overtaking cyclists. Additionally, motorists need to know and follow all the rules of the road and avoid any distractions.

One quick look at a cell phone and a child cruising main on their new birthday present could result in tragedy. Don’t let it happen. Think of the children you know; think of their parents and grandparents. Slow down and enjoy the summer so that children on bicycles can enjoy it too.
