Conversations with God

Hello God, it’s me, Mara:

You know, Lord, sometimes friends share interesting things that they’ve found on the ‘net’; take for instance, a penny. Who’d have thought that there was a day to celebrate a Lost Penny, which is the 12th of February. And who among us has not lost a penny or two – let alone found a penny somewhere, even in the grocery store parking lot. That was a special time as the ‘box boy’ was totally amazed when asked to pry it out of the frozen piece of ice. Did he ever smile when he heard: “See a penny – let it lay, bad luck will follow you all day; See a penny, pick it up, all that day you’ll have good luck. Boy howdy, do I need some good luck,” he said, as he grabbed the penny and pocketed it.

Who among us probably doesn’t have a few pennies tucked away in a few nooks and corners around the house? How about seeking them out, making a pile of them.

Friend ‘Gary’ suggested that since the 12th is National Lost Penny Day, maybe we could make a game of it and if we have kids, plan a scavenger hunt. Tee hee. ‘Gary’ said that he sometimes, just for fun, will flip a coin [OR a penny] to help him make a decision. Perchance more important, donate pennies to a good cause, or start a penny collection, or give someone a penny for their thoughts, or like ‘Gary’ suggested, buy some penny candy.

It was interesting to discover that the very first U.S. penny was designed by Benjamin Franklin, and minted in 1787. Probably billions of pennies have been minted and put into circulation since then. We also discovered that in 1909, the penny became the first coin to bear a president’s image. It was first released on February 12th, 1909, to honor Abraham Lincoln’s 100th birthday.

Lord, Your word tells us, Matt: 6:21: “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
