Carter County Greats

If you picked up a copy of the Billings Gazette or checked out 406mtsports.com in December, you likely read at least a portion of their Montana Greats Project. The project, taken on by sports reporter Jeff Welsch, gives an opinion of the greatest athlete from every Montana town. It gives a brief overview on each athlete and was released in a series of articles in alphabetical order.

A conversation about the project with a couple of local sports enthusiasts led to the idea of creating a list of greats from Carter County. But who would (or should) make the list?

The Montana Greats Project lists Alzada's Larry Sandvick, rodeo, and Ekalaka's Pat Hansen, football, as the best athletes from the two towns. Either is hard to argue against but what about the rest of the communities in the county? Who else could have been chosen? Perhaps a list chosen by Eagle subscribers would be the most democratic approach.

All readers are hereby challenged to come up with a list of their own top five athletes from Carter County. Send your list to the Eagle or drop it off sometime during the month of January. Don't just list five athletes, give some evidence and history to back your claim.

In February, the top 10 Carter County Greats will be revealed.
