Katie Sullivan, also known as Kalifornia Katie, recently traveled to Willow Bay Raceway, near Ipswich Australia as part of the Team USA contingent to compete in the Australian Winter Nationals, an International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) event. The International Hot Rod Association is the second largest drag racing sanctioning body after the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA).
Sullivan and her teammates were hoping to make history by becoming the first team to make a six second pass on a Pro Stock Motorcycle. That honor was taken by Australian Luke Crowley a few days before Sullivan's arrival.
The team then set their sights on competing for the top spot at the Australian Winternationals, and IHRA event. Due to rain, Sullivan was limited to one qualifying pass and while she managed to make the field, it was in the bottom half of the bracket so she faced one of the top qualifiers of the race.
After defeating her first-round opponent, Sullivan then faced the man who took the honor for the first six second pass in Australia, Crowley. Kalifornia Katie defeated Crowley by running a 6.96 second pass at 191 miles per hour, compared to Crowley's 7.02 second pass.
In the final round Sullivan faced the newly crowned Australian Pro Stock Motorcycle champion, Ryan Lamuth. Sullivan showed the Australian champion how it was done by taking the win in the final round and winning the Australian Winternationals. While Sullivan did not surpass the Australian national record, she now holds the fastest elapsed time record and the fastest mile per hour record in Pro Stock Motorcycle at Willow Bay Raceway.
Kalifornia Katie is a popular competitor in the NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle ranks in the United States and runs several national events a year. She is the daughter of Terri Sullivan, and the granddaughter of Madlon Brence and the late William Brence. Her trip to Australia was sponsored by Force Wear Group. Accompanying Sullivan to Australia was her fiancé, Greg Justice, and crew chief Rhett Lougheed. Katie's brother Chance Sullivan was able to fly in from Malaysia, where he is currently employed, to be a part of the crew that put her in the winner's circle.
