"BBs & Bows in the Badlands": Families can spend a day outdoors June 22

On Saturday, June 22, youths ages 9 and older who enjoy spending time outdoors can participate in a day devoted to developing outdoor skills and knowledge in a variety of hands-on activities. “BBs & Bows in the Badlands” will run from about 1-7 p.m. on Springhill Ranch southwest of Wibaux. The event is designed for families to enjoy a day of archery, BB guns, wildlife exploration, conservation and outdoor cooking. There is no cost; however, participants must register by Saturday, June 15 by calling or texting 406-365-7046 or 406-289-0010.

Wibaux County Extension; Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks; the Mule Deer Foundation and the Stenson and Taliaferro families have teamed up to offer this day of fun in the badlands. Besides shooting and archery, participants can learn about wildlife tracks and scat, the elusive swift fox, snakes and reptiles, prairie grasses and Dutch oven cooking.

Activities will cater to participants with all levels of expertise, and stations will highlight the unique badlands environment of beautiful eastern Montana. The day will end with a campfire supper and S’mores.

The goal of the day is to provide youth and their families a chance to unplug (guaranteed no cell service) and learn a little more about the eastern Montana ecosystem and some of the many opportunities to recreate in it. Participants will also learn how agriculture contributes to healthy wildlife habitat.

Registration is required so food and supplies can be planned. Check-in will be between 1 and 2 p.m. Door prizes will be awarded. Anyone who is interested in attending or would like more information may contact Adele Stenson at the numbers listed above.
