Roadwork completed at Makoshika State Park

(Glendive, MT) – When the starting gun sounds this weekend for the 30th Annual Buzzard Day Run at Makoshika State Park, participants will travel the fresh pavement of the park’s newly-completed road renovation. The project was completed Monday, June 3, 2019 and the road and all backcountry areas of the park will open at 1 p.m.

“Everyone is excited the Makoshika State Park road is opening today. Tourists from near and far have been waiting for this day and now we can finally enjoy Montana's largest state park to its fullest,” said Chis Dantic, Park Manager. “Thank you to the community of Glendive and my staff for their patience, and we look forward to another great year of recreating in Makoshika State Park.”

The $1.85 million project included improving the road base, resurfacing the road, and repairing culverts and other drainage features. Makoshika’s famous geology makes roads in the park more prone to drainage problems, upheaving, rutting, and other structural decline. To help combat these issues, the renovation project utilized recycled pavement, deeper dig-outs, and concrete additives to strengthen the road and provide more stability in the moving soils of the park’s badland topography.

While the road renovation is now complete, work on re-vegetation and erosion controls will begin on June 10. This final phase of the project will not affect public access to the park.
