Twenty-one Carter County 4-H and FFA youth members weighed in 34 market steers on December 27 at the Ekalaka scale. All of the market steers that were weighed in are ranch raised here in Carter County and ranged in weight from 580-900 pounds. The average weight was 694 pounds.
Beef weigh-ins are the first stop on the journey to the Carter County Fair. Participants use the weigh-ins from the event to calculate the final weight that their market steer will need to be to provide their buyers with a quality finished product.
Following the weigh-ins, Austin Buzanowski, Livestock Production Specialist at AgPro Solutions, provided the youngsters with basic information on cattle nutrition and how to properly feed their market steer. He demonstrated the different consumable parts of a market beef animal in a fun, interactive way and talked about how nutrition plays into making a wholesome, safe end product for the consumer.
