Conversations with God

Hello God, it’s me, Mara:

You know, Lord, here’s an interesting Bible Verse for this season from Psalm 62:5: “My soul waits silently for God alone, for my expectations are from Him.”

As we practice Your Presence, Lord, we can expect. A story is told of a mother who expects: she expects it’s going to be a bright day; she expects to hear from a family member; she expects her lima beans are sprouting and that it will be an early spring; she expects her children to be good. This mother expects the best.

June Masters Bacher wrote: “Such a way of thinking gave me a delightful childhood. Other girls’ mothers thought this or that; my Mama expected it. Thinking had to do with the brain, she said; it had its place in school. But expecting? That was of the spirit.”

As we look forward to Christmas this year with great expectations, we may perhaps be like the shepherds who followed the Star of Bethlehem 2,000 years ago, we can follow an example of expecting; because, don’t we all expect wonderful things to happen to us and to and for our loved ones?

To expect is to anticipate, wait, foresee, maybe even predict, also to take for granted, assume, guess and also to envision. In Psalm 62:5, what is David’s soul waiting for and expecting? Read on: God only is his rock and his salvation: God is his glory and strength; God is his refuge. “Trust in Him, at all times,” David writes in verse 8; “Trust in Him at all times, you people; pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us. Selah.”

How about us? We also could join in the great expectations of this holy season and expect a miracle, couldn’t we? We can pray: “Come into our hearts, Lord Jesus. We are expecting You.”
