The Bulldog defense couldn't get any stops in the first quarter at Savage last Friday night. Savage seemingly moved the ball at will and had a 32-6 heading into the second. CCHS was shorthanded due to injuries and ineligibility, and several players had to play new positions. In the second quarter, the Dogs got into a rhythm on offense. They moved the ball well on option runs and pass plays down the field. On the last play of the first half, Savage intercepted a ball in the end zone.
Blue continued to close the gap in the second half. They had multiple stops on defense and continued to find success moving the ball. Twice they held Savage to fourth and long situations. On both occasions, the Dogs had pass defenders in good position to make a play and force a turnover on downs, but both times those defenders were unable to make the play. Every other big play from Savage in the second half was due to missed tackles.
Again it was defense that kept Blue from winning the contest as they were unable to complete the comeback, losing 53-63. If they can tighten up defensively, the Dogs have enough offensive firepower to upset last year's state champions from Westby-Grenora this Friday in Grenora.
