Bulldogs start season strong

CCHS started this year's football season on the right foot with a strong win against the Froid/Medicine Lake Red Hawks last Friday.

The Red Hawks came out in a tight formation and were stuffed repeatedly by the Dogs run defense. Blues first score of the season came via safety when junior Mick O'Connor sacked Walker Ator in the end zone with 4:29 left in the first quarter.

On the next series, O'Connor recovered a fumble and gave the ball back to the Bulldog offense. Freshman Turner Tooke scored seconds later on a 19 yard run, his first ever high school touch. Senior Caleb Fix ran in the extra point.

After another Bulldog fumble recovery, this time by Fix, Blue scored again. The score came on a 16 yard Fix run. Blue failed to convert the extra point. Fix also scored on a 22 yard run before the end of the first quarter which ended 21-0.

In the second quarter the Dogs continued to play shut down defense. At about the midway point in the quarter, Jared Pardee hooked up on a pass with Grafton Bonsell for an 8 yard score. The extra point try failed. At the half, the score was 27-0.

The Hawks changed their game plan at half time and came out in a spread offense to start the third quarter. They found some success against the Bulldog defense early on, scoring on a 21 yard pass at the 7:57 mark of the third and again on a 10 yard pass with 4:45 remaining. After those two scores, the Dogs adjusted against the spread and shut down the Hawks for the remainder of the game.

The Bulldogs scored four more times in the third quarter. Two of them were Fix runs, a third was on a Fix kickoff return. Sophomore David Ashbrook scored from 2 yards out in the final seconds of the third quarter. The score started the running clock rule and was the final of the game as the Bulldogs went on to win, 52-12.

This Friday, the Bulldogs will take on Richey/Lambert at home. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
