inning of the Annual Summer Weed Tour. These tours include guest speakers and help inform farmers and ranchers of the different varieties of native and invasive plants, along with different land and livestock grazing strategies.
The first tour: Tri-County Weed Tour, will begin at 2 p.m. July 16 at the intersection of Westmore and Cabin Creek Road. A meal will be served by the Cabin Creek Homemakers. The second tour: Carter County Range Tour, will commence at 2 p.m. on July 17 at the Markuson Ranch. A meal will be provided by Fallon/Carter Extension, Carter County Weed District and Carter County Conservation District. There will be three Private Pesticide and Commercial Pesticide credits available. The third tour: Powder River County Weed Tour, will initiate at 1 p.m. on July 18 at the Powderville Hall. There will be three Private Pesticide and Commercial Pesticide credits available.
Topics that will be covered on the tours will include:
Kim Gibbs, Miles City Community College, Agriculture Instructor and Cheryl Schuldt, Montana Rangeland Partnership, Range Technician will speak on native and introduced plants in Eastern Montana. Gibbs and Schuldt will be discussing native and invasive plants commonly seen in eastern Montana rangelands. They will cover tools and resources available for identifying plants. In Carter County, Schuldt will also talk about monitoring rangeland health.
Kevin Sedivec, NDSU Extension Rangeland Management Specialist will present Grazing Systems and Using Grazing to Manage Weeds. Sedivec will share tips for producers looking to maintain the quality of their pastures given last year's dry conditions and the likelihood that even an average year won't be enough to catch up.
Melissa Maggio, MT Biocontrol Project Coordinator, will present The Role of BioControl in Noxious Weed Control. Maggio will be discussing releasing, monitoring and collecting biological weed control agents of leafy spurge and Canada thistle, while demonstrating all of the associated tools.
The 4th Annual Weed Pull will be held in conjunction with the 1st Annual Youth Range Contest on Thursday, July 19. This event is a collaboration of efforts between the Fallon and Carter County Weed Departments, the Fallon and Carter County NRCS Offices, the Little Beaver Conservation District, the Carter County Conservation District and the Fallon/Carter County Extension Office. This event is also possible becasue of funding from the Montana Noxious Weed Trust fund and a grant that Carter County and Fallon County Weed Departments received.
The event will be open to youth ages 9 to 19 from Southeast Montana as well as the Western Dakotas. 4-H and FFA are highly encouraged to participate. There will be lots of great prizes and door prizes.

9 a.m. - Weed Pull and Weed Pull Awards
Noon lunch served by Tumbling Tumbleweeds 4-H Club
12:30 p.m. - Range Contest Stations - Fallon and Carter County NRCS
