Two dozen basketballs and over 50 pairs of feet drummed a stampede in Carter County High School's gymnasium Monday afternoon during Summit Basketball Camp. Coach Kayla Olsen froze the chaos of neon shirts, bouncing balls and shifting sneakers with one blast from her whistle: Time to get to work.
Baker coach Sheila O'Connor led the older kids in a series of warm up drills: wrapping the ball around their heads, their waists and between their legs. Balls started rolling away as soon as the three steps were combined, but kids started getting the hang of it.
The younger kids practiced their dribbling and ball protection before testing their shooting skills on lowered hoops in the elementary school's gym.
127 kids signed up for basketball camp this year.
Water bottles were encouraged and snacks and T-shirts were available for sale. This year's T-shirt graphic was pressed onto a neon green shirt in front of the kids by Trista DeFrance.
Coach Olsen wants to see the kids practice their shooting, passing and, especially, dribbling after camp is over. As long as they're playing with a ball, they'll improve. Smiling, she said, everyone who registers takes home a ball, so there are no excuses.
Coach Olsen received lots of help from other coaches, teachers, parents and high schoolers in running the drills and keeping everything organized. "I couldn't do it without them," she said.
