It was tough sledding for the Bulldogs during their homecoming game against Westby-Grenora last Friday night at Rowley Field. The Thunder, who are the number one ranked team in the state, primarily run a spread offense with a heavy emphasis on passing. In fact, all of their offensive scores came through the air against CCHS. They also added six points on a 34 yard fumble return.
Usually, Westby-Grenora runs a lot of short routes like hitches, slants, drags, and arrows. Occasionally, they will throw the ball deep after setting the defense up. Friday in Ekalaka was different.
CCHS came out playing very tight coverage, forcing the Thunder out of their comfort zone. Westby-Grenora had to change their game plan, but it wasn't enough as they managed to outscore the Bulldogs 65-7.
Offensively, CCHS had a hard time getting anything going, especially in the first half. With trouble on the line due to a nose guard-linebacker stack over the offensive center and confusion in the backfield, Blue was held scoreless in the first two quarters.
After the half, CCHS came out with more energy. Players were flying all over the field on defense and catching a few blocks on offense. In the third quarter, junior back Caleb Fix bounced an inside run off the right side and scored. Two other drives stalled when open Bulldog receivers dropped passes. CCHS defense played better in the second half too, holding MonDak to 13 points.
Hopefully, the game offered the team something to build off of. Especially since this weekend they are set to take on another undefeated opponent in Wibaux, ranked number two in the state. The game will kickoff at 1:00 p.m. at Wibaux.
