Letter to the editor

Dear Editor,

“And now,” as Paul Harvey said, “for the rest of the story. . .”

In response to the thumbs down to the Ekalaka Public Library regarding the homecoming window, we need to be aware of certain facts (which were not included in the letter) before we jump to erroneous conclusions.

Students did not have school on Friday the 15th, and the library was open from noon to 6 P.M. on that day. Their homecoming window could have been put in place during regular library hours, while students were out of school, so as not to place an unnecessary burden on the Library Director, who already had plans for Saturday. Granted, there was a volleyball game that day in Jordan and the team bus left at 11 A.M., but the freshman boys could have easily completed the work.

Prior arrangements were made with the Library Director, who said that the class could come during working hours to put up the window. The fact that the message was not passed on to the freshman class by the person requesting to use the library window in no way obligated the director to drop what she was doing at the last minute to open the library for them. Lack of communication on their part does not mandate an emergency on her part.

I am well aware of the budget constraints placed on facilities in a small town; most small libraries run on donations and mil levies. To imply that the library does not serve the public twists the facts with disinformation and is nothing more than fake news. The Library Director worked with the students by asking that they come on Friday, during the hours the library was open. She is in no way responsible for the fact that they did not do so.
