Fix tops podium twice at state meet

Anyone who has picked up a newspaper recently has likely observed that recent Carter County High School graduate Tanner Fix is fast. Last weekend he proved that by hurdling his way into the record books during the MHSA Class C State Track & Field Championship in Laurel.

Fix made it to the state meet in three events, the 100m hurdles, 300m hurdles, and the 400m. Last year he placed 6th in the 100m hurdles and 7th in the 300m hurdles.

He hadn't even ran the 400m in his high school career until the district meet on May 11 of this year when he did it to score the team points. But after placing second at districts and divisionals, he wound up on the card at state.

On Friday, Fix took first in the 110m prelims when he ran a 15.40, beating Darby's Kye McCollaum by .07 seconds. That time was a new personal best.

Fix opted out of running the 400m at the state meet, instead choosing to focus on his chance at winning the two hurdle events.

He did.

In the 100m hurdle finals, Fix posted a 15.68. Again he beat McCollaum, this time by five hundredths of a second. In the 300m hurdles, Fix beat McCollaum by thirteen hundredths of a second with a time of 40.95. That time was also a personal best.

The Carter County High School men's track team finished 10th at the state meet. Fix was the only member of the team there. He alone placed 10th out of 39 teams who scored points. For comparison, there are over 90 Class C schools that compete in track & field in Montana.

Not too bad for a kid from Beaver Flats.

Fix won the two hurdle events at the state meet exactly one week after giving his co-valedictorian address at CCHS. Earlier this spring, he signed with South Dakota School of Mines where he will compete on the track team and study electrical engineering. To say the last few months have been a whirlwind for him might be an understatement. But it was well worth it.

Yes, Tanner Fix is fast. Now he has two gold medals to prove it.
