Town election upcoming

This year, the Town of Ekalaka has the following positions up for election: mayor, four-year term, currently held by Steve DeFord; council member, two-year term, currently held by Clayton Stieg; council member, four-year term, currently held by Phil Cook; council member, four-year term, currently held by Ella Voise.

Several of these officials have indicated that they may not file for another term.

As of May 23, 2017, those who have filed for these positions are Pat Strickland for Mayor and Jim MacKay for a council position.

Anyone interested in filing needs to do so before 5:00 pm on Monday, June 19, 2017. Paperwork for filing is available at the Town Office or at the Carter County Clerk & Recorders Office. If a primary election is needed, it will be held on September 12. Otherwise, the general election date will be November 7, 2017.

In order to become a council member, interested individuals must be a resident of the Town of Ekalaka for at least 60 days prior to the election to office. To be mayor, one must be at least 21 years old, be a resident of the state for at least three years, and be a resident of the Town of Ekalaka for at least two years prior to election.
