School election ballots mailed

Mail ballots for the current school election were sent out earlier this week. In order for votes to be counted, those ballots must be sent or delivered to Ekalaka Elementary and received before 8:00 p.m. on May 2, 2017.

This year there is one position up for election on the board of trustees. That trustee will fill a three year term for Ekalaka Elementary District #15/ High School District #3. Shay Beyer and Samantha Harris have both filed for the position.

Also on the ballot this year are two levies. One levy proposition is to finance the high school general fund in the amount of $5416.38, approximately 0.11 mills, for the purpose of properly maintaining and operating the programs of the high school district.

The other levy is for financing the High School Building Reserve Fund in the amount of $100,000 per year for three years, approximately 2.01 mills per year, for the purpose of proper maintenance and repair, future construction, equipping or enlarging the school. One main area of concern for the high school is the 37 year old boiler system that has no back up. The expected lifespan of the boiler is 40 years.

A trustee election for Carter County High School District #2 was previously canceled as the number of candidates filing for the position was one. Tim McInerney, incumbent, will remain as trustee from District #2.
