  • Letter to the editor

    Updated Sep 9, 2020

Dear Editor, If you are like me, you are concerned about some of the things that are happening in America. There is rioting, people burning down buildings, shooting innocent people and shooting law enforcement, among other things. To top it off, we have Democrat politicians who are encouraging the rioters and wanting to defund law enforcement. For these, and many other reasons, I think it is important to elect a person with common sense and integrity as the next US Congressman from Montana. That person would be my friend,...

I have been reading with interest the news articles about the disruption of the US Postal Service over the last week. I rely on the USPS to deliver several of my life-saving medications. The latest attempts by Postmaster General DeJoy and the Trump Administration to disrupt our access to the mail may delay my latest delivery of medication. I am terrified of what that may mean for my health and wellbeing. Some of my most important medications are delivered by mail, including my high blood pressure and heart medications. As a...

Today I read two articles from the online magazine “The Conversation” on boredom. The pandemic of 2020 has certainly made the emotion of boredom a much greater possibility. I contend that my childhood in Carter County allowed me to adapt to any vicissitudes of boredom. I learned to work with boredom and not against it. This was perhaps one skill which has stayed with me over the years, and is unquestionably an asset now. Today in the 21st Century, boredom has been found to be helpful by psychologists in that it enc...

Dear Editor, I am writing this letter as a concerned citizen of the town of Ekalaka. With summer and nice weather upon us, more kids and families are out walking to the pool, the grocery store, or to a friend’s house. Sadly, on more than one occasion, I have witnessed cars speeding past these pedestrians, going well over the town’s posted speed limit. I have talked with the city officials because I fear that someone is going to get hit by one of these reckless drivers, unfortunately they don’t want to get involved. I am re...

    Father Thomas Tobin|Updated Jul 30, 2020

July 24, 2020 - Life during the COVID-19 is pretty dull around here. So I have decided to liven matters up a bit. Now they say don’t bring up politics or religion, if you do you may start trouble, both are great for a hot discussion, so how about religion? I have wanted to do this for a long time. What is that? Defend the Catholic Church. The Catholic Church has been kicked around and hated by people all over the world since its very existence and that goes back to its founder, Jesus Christ. As Jesus said, “as the world has...

By protecting yourself you a...

Good afternoon citizens of Carter County. I wanted to be the one to tell you all I have decided I need to move on to a different job. Through my time as the Public Health nurse, I determined my nursing style and the management style of my supervisors are not a good fit. Thank you for your love and support during my tenure as the Carter County Public Health nurse. Best wishes in health, Raquel S. Williams, RN, MSN...

  • Peace officers in Montana

    Updated Jul 9, 2020

submitted by Montana Peace Officer Leaders As a nation, state and society we are living in unprecedented times. As peace officer leaders in the State of Montana, we feel it is our obligation to speak about the unnecessary injuries and deaths, suffered by any persons, at the hands of law enforcement officers who fail or refuse to live by our peace officer code of ethics. We collectively acknowledge that incidents of excessive use of force, violence and misconduct are unacceptable and contradictory to our professional...

  • Supporting 'the rule of law' by supporting our law enforcement

    Updated Jul 9, 2020

submitted by AMERICAN LEGION OF MONTANA As we celebrated our 244th Independence Day on July 4th, 2020 it is has become apparent for us to reflect on our nation builders who brought us to this amazing republic in 1776. A great part of our success in establishing this republic can be attributed to the ‘rule of law’ and our country’s willingness to enforce that rule of law by supporting our law enforcement. In the second decade of our new millennium we once again remember our resolve. The Preamble of the Constitution of the A...

  • The Pitfalls of Nativism

    Updated Jun 4, 2020

John F. Kennedy, from an Irish ancestry, said in regards to nativism, “But emotions of xenophobia – hatred of foreigners – and of nativism - the policy of keeping America ‘pure’ … continue to thrive.” Nowadays this quote might trigger in us Donald Trump’s “America First '' movement and the “Wall”, which was a cornerstone of his 2016 campaign. Undoubtedly, nativism extends to states and in the case of Montana, into geographic portions of the state - west versus east. The sense of security that we all crave is upset by str...

  • OPINION: Whose side is the PSC on, anyway?

    Updated May 28, 2020

Oops...they’ve done it again….On Tuesday, April 21, the Montana Public Service Commission reversed their decision of March 16 in favor of NorthWestern Energy, again. At that meeting the commission told NWE they would have to provide more details about their acquisition of an additional 25% of Colstrip Unit 4 for $1. The PSC told the utility there were too many unanswered questions by concerned citizens and the Montana Consumer Council before they would approve. (Talon Energy of Pennsylvania wants half of the 25%, so NWE has...

  • Memorial Day 2020

    The American Legion|Updated May 21, 2020

Every crisis has new heroes. During the 9/11 attacks, they were the first responders running into burning and crumbling buildings as others ran out. Now, during the Coronavirus pandemic, the most visible heroes are the health care professionals, who are saving others and risking their own lives while doing so. These heroes have much in common with the people that we honor today – America’s fallen veterans. They are men and women who have sacrificed their own lives so others could live. They are both elite and ordinary. The...

The meaning and purpose of Dahl Memorial Healthcare Association expands beyond the medical care provided to our community and the people passing through our community. The economic impact of DMHA is also extremely important. The direct effect of DMHA’s impact on our local economy includes a payroll last year of $1.76 million dollars and provided 39 full time equivalent jobs. Indirectly, DMHA also produces an additional 14 non-hospital jobs. Individuals employed at Dahl Memorial Healthcare spend a portion of their salary on go...

Dear Editor, I am writing to recommend a couple of men who were great Legislators and would now like to serve Montana in a different capacity. One of these men is Senator Scott Sales. Scott is the only person in Montana history who was picked by his peers to serve as both Speaker of the House and President of the Senate. He served as President of the Senate for both sessions that I was in the Senate. One thing I can say from that experience is that Scott was one of the purest voters I’ve known, he was firm, yet he was fair t...

  • COVID update

    Updated Apr 29, 2020

Dear Fellow Eastern Montanan, As rapidly as this situation is moving, no doubt some of this news will be outdated by the time you read this, but here is the situation as of April 22: The Governor held a press conference today where he outlined a three phase plan to re open the state. Details can be found at COVID19.MT.gov. Several Republican legislators, including myself, have been leaning hard on the executive to get this done, so I'm glad he's at least getting started, but we need to do more. I am going to continue to work...

I am writing to thank you for your past support of the Dahl Memorial Healthcare Association operating mill levy. I am requesting your continued support for the mill levy for operational assistance. The importance of the levy is more than for the operation of the facility. Passing the levy shows solid community support for the facility. When a funding source recognizes strong support from the community, they are likely to partner with us to complete current and future projects. Over the past year, Dahl Memorial has received...

With Tim Fox term-limited, we will elect a new Attorney General this year. I support Fox’s Chief Deputy Attorney General, Jon Bennion. Serving as Fox’s chief of staff for most of his first term was the greatest privilege of my career. I worked closely with Jon. He has the knowledge, experience, work ethic, and judgment for the job. Navigating the Attorney General’s world and Montana’s complex Department of Justice is no small task. The law enforcement community has high regard for Jon. He works well with everyone, is an exce...

With all of the concern over the Covid-19 virus and since I like math numbers, I thought this could be an appropriate time to do some math. I went to school in the B.C. era (before computers and calculators), so my skills might be rusty. I have based my calculations on last weeks’ numbers in the Eagle so they might not be current. Based on Montana’s population being 1,000,000; and the Covid-19 numbers published in the Eagle as to the sickness, hospitalization, and death counts, I have the following percentages: Number of peo...

I read with great interest the article on the back page of the April 3 Eagle about George Yellow Eyes. I saw him play many times and he was indeed a great player. I only saw him in 1957, so didn't see him in his best years. Terry's Glen Kuehn describes the buzzer beater in the semifinals of the tournament in 1957. He described himself as the closest spectator on the Terry bench. I saw it all from about the same distance that he did. Terry had a tall, very good team. State School was short, but they fought Terry tooth and...

  • Shop local

    Updated Apr 16, 2020

The coronavirus has brought out the worst and the best in people. The worst seen by shoppers hoarding items, people ignoring stay at home orders, gathering in larger numbers. The best as seen in our own town where Eva & Michelle Grimes get groceries to help those who need it, and developed a game that gives customers something fun to make their day a little better. Grace and Chris Jardee work so hard to help supply folks with food items they may not be able to get otherwise....

  • Public lands more precious than ever

    Updated Apr 16, 2020

by Tom Puchlerz Montanans are doing our part in this very difficult time to help each other out and curb the spread of the COVID 19 virus. We come together and look out for each other, as we always have in times of crisis, and in this case that means practicing social distancing to slow the spread of this disease. It is times like this that we as Montanans are even more appreciative of our public mountains and foothills, forests and prairies, and rivers and streams. Montanans recreate in the outdoors at as high of a rate as...

    Updated Apr 16, 2020

For the purposes of this letter, I am speaking as a community member, as well as on behalf of my position with Dahl Memorial. During this time, there seems to be more questions than answers, more fear than normality, and more rules than rights. Covid-19 is something new and the uncertainties are greater than the certainties. Because of that we need to be more cautious than not. In our area we have several things that are certain. Cold days are cold and hot days are hot. During such days, we know the effects of what could...

Dear fellow Montanans, I am Jerry Schillinger, Republican candidate for House District 37. My Great Granddad moved his family from Northern Iowa to McCone County in 1910 to help his large family pursue their dreams of owning their own farms. We have been blessed over the years to have hard work, persistence and innovation rewarded. My wife Carol and I raised our sons here in McCone County where they attended school. We are thankful our oldest son Brett and his wife Haley are...

  • Things are Hard: We're Here to Help

    Updated Apr 9, 2020

In just a matter of weeks it seems the world has been flipped upside down. There are very few in this country and in this community who have not been effected either by the novel virus or by the measures enacted to slow its spread. It seems overnight fear has filled our great land. There is fear over the virus, fear over the economy, even political fears. And then add to the fear: isolation, “social distancing,” and labels of being “non-essential” and an overwhelming sense of insecurity and uncertainty, and add to that, t...

In light of a disheartening Op Ed article that has been shared numerous times over social media, I wanted to share some positivity out into my community. My fiancé, son and I moved to Ekalaka in September 2018 and every day spent here in this community has shown more blessings than I could ever count. This has been a dream for us. We have ALL been uprooted from our normal routines in the time of this pandemic. Stores and businesses have found inventive ways to continue to work. Community members are sharing groceries and...
