The Carter County Conservation District, along with the local NRCS office, hosted a fun and educational event on August 28th focusing on women in agriculture. The Carter County Predator Board met on September 2nd at the courthouse. At the meeting, the board accepted Garrett Harrington’s August 22nd letter of resignation. Board members would like to thank Harrington for his years of employment and help with protecting the county’s property and livestock from predators, and wish him well in his new endeavors. There will not be an Annual Alzada Cowboy Poetry, Music and Art Show this year according to founders, Gay Arpan and Chris Maupin. The women who have produced the show since 1989 have decided to cancel due to COVID-19 concerns, noting that seating arrangements can not be made to accommodate health guidelines inside the Alzada Community Hall. The Bureau of Land Management is accepting comments on an environmental assessment that analyzes potential impacts from a modification to American Colloid Company’s existing plan of operations to mine bentonite in Carter County. A phone call out of the blue led Stephen Ely and his wife, Melissa, to Ekalaka for a visit earlier this summer. "We fell in love," the new principal at Ekalaka Public Schools told the Eagle. The Board of Carter County Commissioners in regular session and in consultation with Sheriff Neil Kittelmann recently determined to enter into stage 1 fire restrictions, effective at midnight on Friday, August 28. Stage 1 fire restrictions help land management agencies reduce fire risk and prevent wildfires during periods of high to extreme danger. Tom and Kathy (Major) Stieg were married May 29,1970, at the Congregational Church in Ekalaka. To celebrate 50 years of marriage, an outdoor open house was hosted by their family on August 7 at the property of the same church in which they were married (now the Ekalaka Bible Church). Local baseball and softball supporters have been trying to get a new ball field in Ekalaka since the county elected to fence off the old field that sat between the fairgrounds and high school football field. Almost all of the regularly scheduled events that take place during the Days of '85 Fair and Rodeo took place in 2020, with only a few changes. High temperatures from Thursday to Sunday were around 90 degrees Fahrenheit and Ekalaka received no rain over the weekend. Some of the action from this year's events can be seen above. In September, the Carter County Museum will celebrate Welcoming Week with a series of events geared around the theme "creating home together." An accurate and complete count of all Montanans is critical for determining the federal funding distributed to the state. Overall, more than $2 billion from 300 federal programs is allocated back to Montana based on Census information. As summer is waning and school is starting, First Baptist Church is happy to announce the return of AWANA clubs. Starting August 26, clubs will meet every Wednesday for the duration of the school year.
