"I didn't know what I wanted it to be, but I didn't want it to be torn down," Sarina O'Connor told the Eagle on Tuesday. By July 8th of that same year, the first issue of The Ekalaka Eagle had emerged from it. The stone structure was built from local sandstone blocks by stone mason Nick Folak, with other materials...

Deciding I was as well concealed as possible for the moment, I lay there thinking of the past and speculating as to my chances for a future. The area was soon swarming with curious civilians and German troops. I could hear their shouts above the exploding ammunition in the burning plane. It would be dark in a short time. My chances of escaping would be much better then. The Germans realized this too, and were combing the countryside. Next thing I knew, a trooper came crashing through the underbrush and stepped right on me....

While reading through Shifting Scenes Vol. IV, I discovered an article by Lawrence Johnston whose family lived at Ridgway. He was in the Air Force during World War II and relates his experience. The article is quite long and will have to be shared in two printings. I felt that this story is fitting as this is the week of Veteran’s Day. Veteran's Day, which is celebrated annually on November 11, commemorates the hardworking men and women who sacrifice their time and put themselves in harm's way to defend the country's core values of freedom and opportunity. While Veteran's Day certainly is a chance to honor those who have donned the uniform during wars and military installments, it also can be a chance to recognize the unsung heroes of wartime - those who step into roles so that soldiers and strategists can...
