The 9th Annual Dino Shindig is set to take place next weekend in Ekalaka. Rita (Babb) Knipfer is the last of Nora (Turbiville) Knipfer's children and spouses alive. Rita is the widow of the late Ernest Knipfer. Organizers and planners of Ekalaka Veteran’s Memorial Park thank TC Energy Foundation for donating $3,000 towards the project. TC Energy has been a generous contributor for community development in the area. The park will be located in Perso Park on Main Street. It will have a masonry reflecting wall and a patio with three benches facing the wall. The wall will include the seals of the branches of the military. Plans for the Days of ‘85 are continuing as the event draws nearer. The annual fair and rodeo is slated for August 12th through August 15th this year. On Thursday, sheep dog trials will be taking place at Ekalaka Track and Arena. On Friday at noon the pet parade will begin at the fairgrounds. This year’s Days of ‘85 parade is quickly approaching. With the fair only four weeks away, now is the time for businesses, ranches, churches, organizations and classes to start brainstorming float ideas. “Hometown Heroes” is this year’s fair and parade theme. Wrangling up nearly 100 Lovecs and getting them to stand still long enough to take a picture is no easy task, as evidenced in the photo at left. The 2021 Emil and Eula Lovec Reunion took place July 1st through July 4th at Camp Needmore outside Ekalaka. The 7th Annual Summit Basketball Camp, named after legendary women's college basketball coach Pat Summit, was held June 21-23 in Ekalaka. The camp is put on each year by Kayla Olsen with the assistance of a large number of volunteers who help coach and organize it. Piggy-backing off of Summit Basketball Camp, the inaugural Summit Volleyball Camp was held on the same week of June in Ekalaka. The camp was organized by 2017 CCHS graduate Glen Frye, who received assistance from many of the same people that helped put on the basketball camp. Conner and Kiplee Castleberry of Ekalaka announce the birth of their third daughter. At 8:33 p.m. on June 21, 2021, Kinsey Summer Castleberry arrived at Sidney Health Center in Sidney. Montana Shakespeare in the Parks' performance of "Cymbeline" was well attended by members of the community on Tuesday evening in Ekalaka. The performance was again sponsored by Sagebrush Service Club and enjoyed on the Dahl Memorial Healthcare lawn. The Town of Ekalaka plans to use over $1.6 million in combined funding to replace nearly one mile of aging water lines. Construction is scheduled to take place in the summer of 2022, according to a preliminary engineering report completed by Great West Engineering of Billings. The only Junes the area has received less came in 1933 (0.53 inches) and 1949 (0.49 inches). Ekalaka had 1.14 inches in June of ‘88. There is a new extension agent in town. Amanda Williams comes to the area with a familiarity for the region she is now serving. Williams grew up in Miles City and spent a lot of time on the family ranch near Ekalaka. The 13th Annual Leaders, Legends, and Legacies Football Camp took place last week in Ekalaka. There was an outstanding turnout at this year's camp with nearly 100 kids participating. Campers came from all over the state, North Dakota, South Dakota and even one player from Florida. Coaches shared knowledge and life lessons to the young athletes. Postmaster Becky Jesperson retired from the U.S. Postal Service on May 28, 2021 after thirty-five years of service. A retirement celebration was held for her at the Ekalaka Post Office on June 25. Jesperson started her career in 1986 as a clerk at the Ekalaka Post Office. She continued to work as a clerk until her promotion to postmaster in 2019. Alfred and Avis Stieg moved back to the area from Washington in 1971 after Alfred completed a two-week agent training course at a center in Freemont Nebraska operated by the Standard Oil Division of American Oil Company.
