On September 22nd, Mike and Cheryl Schuldt came to Ekalaka to assist local Butch Nies in hosting a sheep shearing demonstration. Mike Schuldt has been shearing for 33 years and has traveled all over the world doing so, including trips to New Zealand and Australia. The general municipal election for the Town of Ekalaka will be a mail ballot election this year. On Wednesday, October 15 the Carter County Clerk and Recorder’s Office will mail ballots to all registered active voters who reside within the boundaries of Ekalaka. Last Wednesday Senator Steve Daines had the chance to talk to juniors and seniors from Carter County High School. Daines met with the students virtually during one of Mr. Miller's social studies classes. Work continues on the East Short Pines Restoration and Resiliency project. The project, located in the East Short Pines Land Unit, one of eight land units managed by the Sioux Ranger District, is in western South Dakota and part of the Custer Gallatin National Forest. Work started in 2019 on the timber sale project and Nieman Lumber out of Spearfish, SD is conducting the work. Carol (Peabody) Spencer is in her first year teaching in her hometown. The 2009 Carter County High School graduate said that her and her husband, Rusty, made the decision to move back to Ekalaka to be closer to her family ranch and because they wanted to be a part of the community. Concrete is being poured this week outside the new connecting wing at Ekalaka Public Schools. The project is now in its final stages.
