Readers of the Eagle may have recently noticed an ad in the paper seeking local ranchers who are willing to donate beef to Ekalaka Public Schools for the lunch program. On December 20th, the first beef donation was dropped off at the school by Abbey Bruski of Beaver Creek Homegrown. Employees at Dahl Memorial Healthcare recently rolled up their sleeves, grabbed some icing and gumdrops and competed in a gingerbread house decorating contest. The houses are currently on display at the front desk of the hospital and ready for voting. Community members can stop in and vote between now and December 31st. Around fifty members of the community enjoyed a free holiday meal and some Christmas entertainment at Wagon Wheel Café on Tuesday evening. The café provided the main course with all the fixings while several who attended brought in dessert for all to enjoy. Sagebrush Service Club members announced the winners of their annual Christmas lighting contest this week. Last Thursday, judges checked every house and business in town before selecting winners. Prizes were awarded to the top three residences and top business. Gary and Nita Schallenberger took first place, Mike and Alice Archer took second and Mark and Judy Wright took third. This month, Dawg House Pub owners Chris and Grace Jardee did something a little bit different for Christmas. In the spirit of giving, the pub has held different giving events over the course of the last four weeks. Earlier this year, VFW Auxiliary set up Beaver Lodge Cemetery with Wreaths Across America for fallen veterans. There are 250 veterans buried at the cemetery. Because of a time crunch the auxiliary wasn’t able to do a fundraiser for the wreaths, which cost $15 each. Twelve of them were sent, along with an American flag and several U.S. military service flags. It all began when a local teacher, Mr. Whitney, received a special delivery letter from Santa Claus at the North Pole. Santa asked if Mr. Whitney and his students could make a very special mailbox that would be used just for children to put letters to Santa into. This would ensure that Santa and his elves received the letters as soon as possible. Mr. Whitney found the old mailbox in the school library, where it was being used as a book drop. Due to rising costs, Eagle subscription rates will increase on January 1. The cost for an in-county subscription will be $40 and the cost for an out-of-county subscription will be $45. Subscribers who wish to save money by purchasing a three-year subscription will still have the opportunity to do so. The Eagle will publish its Christmas issue on December 24th. Letters to Santa and greetings from businesses and individuals will be included in that issue. The issue dated December 31st will correspond with the usual date between Christmas and the new year that the Ekalaka Eagle is not published. The children of Rodney and Tracey Walker (CCHS Class of 1980) pulled off a surprise joint birthday party for their parents on Saturday at Carter County Events Center in Ekalaka. The couple spent the day in Belle Fourche, where they had attended a funeral earlier, with their son Travis Walker. On November 17th, students in Mrs. Carol Spencer's fifth grade class at Ekalaka Public Schools hosted a Native American Artifacts Museum in the gym. A Veterans Day program took place at Carter County High School on November 11. Several local veterans were in attendance. Six were 'adopted' by different Ekalaka Public Schools classes. Each class made posters for their veterans based off of interviews with them. Carter County Museum received a grant from the Montana Land Title Association Foundation for $1,000 this month to assist in the operation of CCM and its showcasing of the rich history of Montana.
