Greg and Susan Tooke moved to Ekalaka in 1976. With a degree in veterinary medicine, Greg had always wanted to return home to set up a vet clinic. Susan was dubious but was in lust at the time, and would go anywhere as long as it was with Greg. They have been together 53 years! So with McLean, who was about 6 months, they moved to the old Nellie McLean house in Ekalaka. He did dog spays on the kitchen table and cat spays on the ironing board. The Gumbo Gophers 4-H club recently held their annual community barbecue and fundraiser for the Alzada Fire Department and their club. The 4-H Club wants to thank all those who attended and made the evening a successful event. A great meal was enjoyed by all. Fun games and a dunk tank were the highlight of the evening. This year’s Carter County Days of ‘85 parade is quickly approaching. With the fair only three weeks away, now is the time for businesses, farms and ranches, churches, organizations and classes holding reunions to start brainstorming float ideas. “Carter County: Where the West Was Won” is this year’s fair and parade theme. The parade is scheduled for Sunday, August 14 at 11 a.m. Entries for the parade are due by Friday, August 12. Late entries may be accepted, but will not be judged. Plans for the Days of ‘85 are continuing as the event draws nearer. The annual county fair and rodeo is slated for August 11th through August 14th this year. On Thursday, sheep dog trials will be taking place at Ekalaka Track and Arena. A silent auction will begin and animal shows will also be taking place. On Friday at 10 a.m., a sand volleyball tourney will be taking place at the town park. At noon the pet parade will begin at the fairgrounds. The Gumbo Gophers 4-H Club held their 6th meeting of the year at the Alzada Hall. There were six members, 4 leaders and 3 visitors present. The club is planning a community barbecue on July 20th at 6 p.m. Free-will donations for the meal will go to the Alzada Fire Department. They will also have a silent auction to benefit the 4-H club. Montana Shakespeare in the Parks' performance of "Twelfth Night" was attended by nearly sixty members of the community on Tuesday evening at Ekalaka Elementary. The performance was again sponsored by Sagebrush Service Club. Rocky Mountain College recently announced the 2022 spring semester dean’s list which includes students who maintained a 3.60 to 3.99 grade point average. Emswiler Pool is scheduled to open on Monday, June 27th at 1 p.m. The pool in Ekalaka did not open last year. The pool will then be open Monday through Friday. Carter County Museum recently introduced Chloe Chambers as Museum Educator for the summer of 2022. Chambers came from Georgia where she is a high school science teacher. Countywide voter turnout for the primary election on Tuesday was nearly sixty-three percent, down from 73 percent in 2020. In total, 579 ballots were cast from the county's 922 registered voters.
