Ekalaka resident Les Poland recently returned from an unforgettable trip. The short, three-day journey was an Honor Flight to Washington D.C. that allowed him and around 25 other military veterans the opportunity to visit many of the area's memorials. October 1st found almost 70 people at the Alzada Community Hall celebrating the arrival of fall and the coming together of community. Doors opened at 4 o'clock with games inside and outside provided by Ashlee Thomas. She also headed up Alzada Community Club's last-minute silent auction which brought in almost $300. From a young age, Ekalaka native Clinton Lesh witnessed how the hands of a man through agriculture could shape the often inhospitable elements of the Montana landscape. He has since adapted the tools and materials once used to build a barb-wire fence into a new form. Lesh is an artist, a creator, a storyteller: a metal sculptor. Charles Cook and his wife, Gail, moved to Ekalaka on August 1st. He started to learn about Ekalaka, though, shortly after Highway 323 became fully paved. Cook was working in administration at Poplar at the time, and started driving the newly finished highway on trips from Poplar to Belle Fourche, SD where he grew up. Ekalaka Public Schools Principal Brian Purnell has been working in education since 2006. Purnell grew up in the cattle ranching town of John Day, Oregon, a town similar in size to Baker. He finished high school in 2001 and then attended Corbin University in Salem, Oregon, graduating with an elementary education degree in 2006. The Dawson College Foundation was recently blown away when it received a nearly $1.8 million endowment, the largest donation ever received by the foundation to date, from a family dedicated to bolstering education in Eastern Montana. On September 2, the Carter County FCCLA Chapter (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America) painted blue Bulldog paws that begin on Speelmon Street and end at the school.
