The veterans memorial at Perso Park in Ekalaka received a boost last week with a $1,000 donation from Summit National Bank. South Dakota resident Jake Kenneth Burghduff was found guilty on the charge of deliberate homicide, a felony, on Wednesday at the conclusion of a three-day trial in the homicide of Fallon resident Isaac Carrier. On August 18, 2023, Mid-Rivers Communications released a payment of capital credits to the Cooperative’s members and patrons, with a capital credit retirement totaling approximately $1,024,000. The 2023 retirement includes a portion of the 1996 allocation as well as a portion of the 2022 patronage allocation. Cooperative businesses are owned and democratically controlled by their members. Students attending Ekalaka Public Schools headed back to their respective classrooms last Thursday for the 2023-2024 school year. Total enrollment this year, as of July 25th, is 130 students. There are 71 children in grades K-6, 21 in grades 7-8, and 38 in grades 9-12. Volleyball teams are set to start their seasons on Thursday in Terry. After a six-year investigation, seven people have been charged in connection to an illegal hunting scheme centered around a ranch in Carter County. While most of the defendants in the case are from out of state, at least one is a Carter County resident. The family moved to Montana in 1950 when Harlan was 15 and started the Medicine Rocks Ranch. In 1963 Harlan left the ranch and opened a repair shop and used car dealership in Ekalaka. The first of two anticipated trials in the homicide investigation of Fallon resident Isaac Carrier is set to begin in August and has been moved to Dawson County, and those called for jury duty will need to plan on commuting. The area is farming country and Irving wanted to do ranching. At that time there were ranches available in the Ekalaka area so they moved to the area in 1949 and purchased the Pruess ranch 10 miles north of Ekalaka.
