Several Carter County High School classes held reunions over the Days of '85 weekend in Ekalaka. Below are photographs from three of those reunions, including the class of 1977 that held a reunion to celebrate members of the class turning 60 years old this year. "Winners" of Dahl Memorial Healthcare's ice bucket challenge, a contest started to raise funds for a walking path around the soon-to-be new facility, were Alex Loudermilk (left) and Ryan Tooke (below). The two employees had the most money donated into jars so they had a bucket of ice water dumped on them after the conclusion of the parade on Main Street, Sunday. Judging from the photos, the winners of the contest may have actually been the losers....
This year's Days of '85 Bump-N-Run started with seventeen super stock cars, including two pickups, and 9 modified cars. Weather cooperated, proving a great day of racing in Ekalaka. There were three super stock heats and one modified heat, all providing a lot of excitement and danger on the track as there was one rollover and a few fires. The Carter County Fair Board and Marshall Ranch, sponsors of the 2019 Days of '85 Pet Parade, were pleased with the turnout even though there was one exhibitor less than last year. The entries were colorful and creative and the announcer, Susan Tooke, outdid herself this year with her costume and entertainment! Ekalaka Volunteer Fire Department, along with the aid of some community volunteers, cleaned Main Street last Thursday prior to the county fair. Each volunteer spent anywhere between three and fourteen hours sweeping and shoveling gravel, sand and dirt off the street. Weeds were also removed from cracks in the pavement and concrete. One year ago, a group of local women who dubbed themselves the "Girl Power" group was selling treats, quilts and raffle tickets in Ekalaka to help Diana Harpster-Roby cover costs of donating one of her kidneys. "I cannot express enough gratitude to these girls and the Carter County community for all the support," Harpster-Roby wrote in a letter to the Eagle. Crowds who attended events during the 2019 Days of '85 Fair and Rodeo over the weekend experienced cooler temperatures than last year. Grant money awarded in April will benefit science students at CCHS this fall. The $5,000 grant from ONEOK, Inc. was used to purchase seven microscopes. Former Ekalaka Public Schools Superintendent Daniel Schrock first told science teacher Chioko Hammel about the grant in February. Judges had a difficult time picking winners upon conclusion of the 2019 Days of '85 parade due to a large number of entries. The parade was one of the finest in the last several years. The Nies clan held their family reunion over the weekend starting July 26 at Camp Needmore. Approximately ninety-five family members were in attendance. There was a lot of visiting, reacquainting and acquainting with those who haven't been to recent reunions or were newcomers. Good food and dancing were enjoyed. Dahl Memorial Healthcare’s ice bucket challenge will be coming to a close on Sunday, August 11 following the Days of ‘85 parade. The challenge was started at the beginning of July by employees in order to raise funds to build a walking path around the block of the new facility. Individuals can still donate during the Carter County Fair at Stompin’ Grounds on Main Street. The ice bucket dump will take place on the triangle immediately following the parade. Kathryn Wright officially assumed her superintendent duties at Ekalaka Public Schools on July 9. The Rapid, City South Dakota native first visited the area eleven years ago and “fell in love” with Ekalaka’s skies. Wright completed undergraduate studies in elementary education at Black Hills State University. She then attended the University of South Dakota and obtained a graduate degree in educational leadership to be a K-12 principal. Carter County Museum's Annual Dino Shindig was again a Argentinosaurus-sized success this year. In its seventh year, the event has become one of the more anticipated summer events in Ekalaka, and each year, an expanded slate of activities has helped it to grow. Weather cooperated during the inaugural Beaver Creek Rendezvous Charity Shoot on July 20. Shooters competed in a standing 100 yard scoped target shoot and a standing silhouette target shoot with a scoped .22 rim-fire rifle. Fulton and Betty Jo Castleberry both grew up in Carter County and graduated from Carter County High School. Fulton grew up in Ekalaka and Betty Jo (LaBree) Castleberry grew up on O'Fallon Creek 17 miles northwest of Ekalaka. Just before 1 a.m. last Friday, a tornado touched down at the Higgins Ranch a few miles northeast of Ridgeway. According to a report from the National Weather Service, the tornado was classified as an EF-1 with winds between 86 and 110 miles per hour. It was approximately 50 yards wide and on the ground for nearly 200 yards. We’re full swing into summer. The pool is open and swimming lessons just wrapped up for the season. Nineteen people donated blood at last week’s community blood drive held at Carter County Events Center. Of those, seven had appointments and four were new donors. In total, 23 units of blood were donated. Sam Cook won the drive’s door prize, $25 worth of Carter County Chamber of Commerce chamber bucks.
