    First year social studies teacher Brett Nielsen loves history. He's also pretty fond of small town living. Nielsen is a Montana native of sorts. He graduated from Westby High School, about 243 miles north of Ekalaka, in 2012. There were four students in his graduating class.   • Grants available to benefit Carter County

    Carter County Community Foundation (CCCF) recently announced the opening of a grant cycle to benefit communities and residents of Carter County. Grants will range in size from $500 to $5,000. Applicants must either be a 501(c)(3) nonprofit or a church, school, hospital or government unit located in Carter County, Montana. The application deadline is October 18, 2019.   • Blood drive yields 24 units

    Last week’s blood drive in Ekalaka fell short of goal, according to coordinator Darlene-Carter Rose. The drive yielded twenty-four units of blood from 22 donors, one number shy on both accounts. Some of the donors with scheduled appointments were sick and a few were turned away because it hadn’t been long enough since they last donated.     The first sod was turned for construction of the new Dahl Memorial Healthcare facility last Friday.
